4 Tips on How to Improve the Well-Being of Your Team
January 8, 2021
As we have already analysed in other articles, there are lots of factors which boost the psychological well-being of team members at work. Similarly, there are also many reasons which explain the absence of said well-being.To try and promote the factors of improvement and reduce the impact of the negative factors, we are going to analyse four essential conditions for a team to function in a healthy way. Obviously, this cannot happen if those members are unhappy within themselves or working together. We are going to carefully look at these conditions.
1. The Power of Confidence
As we know, the relationships between colleagues of the same hierarchical level and the relationships between bosses and their subordinates are crucial when it comes to explaining peoples’ psychological well-being in the workplace.

One of the factors which explains the health of these interpersonal relationships is confidence; the combination of mutual understanding, familiarity and tranquility which are so important to making these relationships function. We frequently refer to the commonplace cliché that it takes a long time to build trust between two people and very little to destroy it. Sometimes it is like that, but often it isn’t.
In any case, the most important thing is that within the workplace, there are the right conditions so that people trust each other, through honesty, not blind following. It is fundamental that people behave in a coherent way, without lies and that employees perceive that there is true transparency in existence about the issues that affect them, instead of a hidden agenda which influences what they do without them even realising.
2. Security vs. Fear
Having security is one of the basic primary needs of all human beings. To understand what this consists of, we have to think that security is, basically, what we feel when we are not afraid.
In normal conditions it is important that the employees of a company feel that the workplace doesn‘t put their health at serious risk, or that, if the dangers to their health are great, that they are taking appropriate measures to minimise those risks. During times like the present, marked by the threat of Covid-19, this factor is of significant relevance.
Feeling that we are working on something significant can be of some recompense in relation to health when conditions are not as good as they should be.
On the other hand, at an organisational level, for a person to feel secure in their position at work, they have to be calm. How? The perception that the likelihood of being fired is low, that there is an emotional environment marked by order, the foresight and levels of uncertainty are maturely managed on behalf of those in charge, given that they assume what they don’t know, and transmit a sensation that things are under control, regardless of whether they are going well or not.
3. Good Working Conditions
Another factor which has a big influence on the psychological well-being of employees is the perception that they are treated appropriately in their role. This is what we commonly understand as good working conditions: an appropriate salary for the difficulty of the task and level of responsibility assumed, a reasonable timetable, adequate physical resources and comfortable and healthy materials to support solid job performance.
In other words, it is not about whether a person needs to work long or short hours, in something very easy or very difficult, or do it for a lot or a little money. These three circumstances are very important but enormously relative: it depends on the subjective perception of the individual as to whether they suffer or enjoy. It instead deals with that the person doesn’t perceive that work “is draining the life from them” because of the inadequate conditions. If it is like that, their physical and psychological health will be negatively affected.
4. Motivation and Meaning
Ultimately, we can’t talk about the most influential conditions on psychological health in the workplace without mentioning motivation.
We have just explained that the salary received, time dedicated or the difficulties of the task are all relevant yet very relative facets. This is also related with motivation, that is, the desire to carry out their work and the associated connection which is created in relation to their tasks and the company they work for.
When motivation is high, one’s mood will be much more positive and so earning less than one might be able to, working long hours or going above and beyond what is expected would be well compensated.
The question is when does motivation appear? It depends on a lot of things, but the main trigger is when people feel that they are working on a relatively interesting project, which has meaning, that it progresses thanks to their personal contribution, and that they do it in a way which they are able to notice, not just imagine.
What we have described until now are just some of the main factors which affect psychological well-being of people in the corporate environment. Independent of the position they have it is important to provide the upmost care of the health of teams. If you have any issue in this aspect, or many, perhaps the time has come to consult a professional who can help you to rectify such errors.
