“We are a family, we are a team”

“We are Pilar and Laura, and we work in the HR & Talent department at González Byass. Founded in 1835, this family company produces wines and spirits worldwide, as well as designing wine tourism experiences with a very clear purpose, for people to thoroughly experience their most precious time: by enjoying and sharing it.”

You both have extensive experience in the area of talent. Have you observed a paradigm shift in employee needs when it comes to attracting and retaining employees properly?

1. You both have extensive experience in the area of talent. Have you observed a paradigm shift in employee needs when it comes to attracting and retaining employees properly?

The way talent is managed has changed a lot in recent years, not only because of technological advances but also because of the preferences of the human team. Today, people are looking to work in companies whose values are aligned with their own. In addition, other factors such as emotional well-being, mental health, and flexibility have risen to the top. That is why, in order to remain competitive, our value proposition must put the employee at the centre and take care of their well-being and development opportunities. This is the only way to continue attracting the best talent and retaining and building loyalty.

“We are a family, we are a team” is probably the claim that best reflects your essence based on caring for your staff. What would be the guidelines for an organisation to cultivate a corporate culture of positive mental well-being among its employees?

As a family business, we like to take care of our teams because the company would not be what it is without them. Therefore, we like to foster an environment of collaboration, training, and continuous development, always striving for our teams’ well-being. To do this, we strongly rely on ifeel, which helps us provide this support and raise awareness of the importance of personal, work, and emotional well-being.

You are currently present in more than a hundred countries. What barriers have you encountered when it comes to ensuring that communication flows between different territories and that culture, mission, and values are aligned?

We are very proud of everything we have achieved over the years. González Byass is a company that was founded in Jerez de la Frontera and has gradually expanded to become what it is today. We are currently a winery group with 11 wineries in Spain and 3 international wineries, two of them located in Chile and one in Mexico. We also have offices in the United States, United Kingdom, and Spain, and we distribute our wines and spirits to a large part of the world.

Against this backdrop, language is one of the barriers we have encountered. Our geographical dispersion means we have employees with different languages of origin, such as Spanish, Chinese, English, and Portuguese. However, we address this challenge by offering language training through our internal LMS (which we call GBknowit).

“Communication is an ongoing day-to-day task, but it is undoubtedly a key element for all of us to work towards a common goal.”.

In addition, HR strives to maintain active communication between all Business Units to ensure that the culture, mission, and values are aligned. To do so, we have an internal communication platform that acts as a social network where we can communicate the latest news and, in turn, teams from different regions can interact with each other by sharing news and best practices from their workplaces, such as events that have taken place, new advertising campaigns, training news, product launches, etc.

Communication is an ongoing day-to-day task, but it is undoubtedly a key element for all of us to work towards a common goal.
